My belief presently is that films produced by the community will be consumed by that community no matter the level of saturation by foreign content and short social media content.
In the pursuit of a society free from gender-based violence, it is imperative to address femicide as a specific challenge. This focus does not undermine the importance of addressing violence against men but seeks to create a comprehensive approach to eliminate all forms of gender-based violence by fostering inclusive conversations and taking collective responsibility.
The task ahead is therefore how to break this cycle and reframe our stories because over time, a change in perspective and frames through which we tell stories in Africa will build a new narrative for the continent.
The only way the perception of African stories can change is by US Africans telling our own stories by ourselves. We should improve in our storytelling by making sure that even if those who don’t know our stories want to tell it, we guide them through and be sure no lies or fabrications are told.
I met Kunle in a year-long State Department program bringing together photojournalists from across the world to share experiences and learnings from covering the COVID-19 pandemic. The program, “A Global Moment in Time,” was part of the U.S. Department of State, International Visitor Leadership Program or IVLP and brought together 73 photojournalists from 55 countries spanning 16 time zones.
